More research into my genre of film.

Thrillers:
Thrillers are a genre of literature, film, and television programming that uses suspense, tension, and excitement as the main elements.

A common subgenre is psychological thrillers. A phychological thriller is a ranged thriller with a big focus on characters; It often incorporates elements of mystery and drama as well as typical traits of a thriller genre. Phycological thrillers also include horror elements. Trends of psychological thrillers are:

  • Reality
  • Perception
  • Mind
  • Existence/purpose
  • Identity
  • Death
These subgenres help to develop the plot and helps shape characters personalities, for example, usually a character will find out the true identity of the mystery antagonist/the devil side of himself or herself in which it is one of the architypes (the loss of innocence)

An example of this genre is: Phycho by Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock has been called 'The master of suspense', Hitchcock often applied Freudian concepts to his thriller as in Rebecca, Spellbound, Vertigo, Phycho, Marnie and Rear Window.

Psycho (1960)

The film depicts the encounter between a secretary, hiding at a secluded motel after embezzling money from her employer, and the motel's disturbed owner and manager and the aftermath of their encounter.

The films opening two minutes is not available to view on http://www.youtube.com/ so I couldn't view that to relate it to my film, so instead, I took a look at the well know shower scene. What I like about this scene is the mystery of the antagonist, he is silhouetted but you can still tell the gender of the antagonist which is male. The fact he is male makes the female look even more venerable. The music in this section builds up tension even more. This music is stereotypical of a thriller film, I personally do not want my film to start with this type of music I would want my film to start with natural sounds such as the sea as this makes it all seem more realistic and will give a greater contrast in mood when the action begins. I think I would like to have upbeat modern music although I think that this will give me a smaller range of audience possibly due to music tastes I think it will really liven up the beginning scene.

Predicited release date

We expect that our film will be filmed, edited and released by Thursday 2nd February. This is only a prediction however.

Classification of film

Suitable only for 15 years and over
No one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

Discrimination

The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuc k’). The strongest  terms (for example, ‘cun t’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex

Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme

No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.

Our film shall be a '15' due to the fact in later scenes there will be scenes of violence and detailed verbal references to sexual violence. There will be shots of nudity as well which isn't suitable for a younger audience. There shall be foul language in some scenes but quite rarely as I don't think swearing is the most effective way of portraying someones feelings.

Distributors who are likely to touch my film

I will be using my own distribution company to distribute my film. This means I own all rights to my film. I came up with my own distribution company. Luja productions.
Its an independent distribution company distributing my film.

The people who are likely to touch this film would be larger companies looking to find a new project to work on. Due to the fact we are a small independent company with limited amount of experience, not a lot of people  would consider taking us on. The distributors who would be likely to touch our film would be distributors such as: Optimum releasing (distributed Submarine 2010) and Overture Films (distributed Paper heart 2009) this is due to the fact that these distributors generally deal with small independent films rather than bit Hollywood films.

Location research

We have two locations that we would like to use as it's easier to film and also allows the audience to get use to the setting.

Our first location is Hastings Beach.

This is the exact location where we will be shooting, I managed to locate our exact position on Google Maps (www.googlemaps.co.uk). A large beach mean more shot opportunities. Natural light means clear pictures. A disadvantage of this location is the uneven ground, due to the stones it may cause a problem with the tripod and we'd have to use hand held shots. Also another disadvantage is the passing traffic could be noisy, which could have an effect on our choice of sound, and whether its diegetic or non-diegetic. Finally because our location is outside the weather could come to be an issue, so we will have to do research on the forecast pre-filming.

Our second location is an underground car park on Robertsons Terrace.

This is a picture of the enterance to the underground car park, unfortunately I could not aquire a image of the inside which is where we'd actually be filming. The benefits of shooting there are is it is indoors so weather will not be a problem, so this makes our shooting schedule more flexible. Also The shooting space is large and there is a range of different spaces to use to shoot some scenes. Finally the atmosphere and scenery in the underground car park suits our film and the narrative. One issue may be how busy it will be, because it is a car park people will be using it all the time, meaning filming could be interrupted or delayed depending on how busy it is. Also lighting could be an issue for there is no daylight down there, so relying on the lighting underground could be a problem we may have to over come.

Production company logos

Me and Emma trial and tested different logos that we could possibly use, we wanted a cutting edge, simplistic, indie inspired logo. One that would be suitable for our intended audience. The final image shown on this post we chose as it's simple, stylistic, easy to remember and fit into our genre. We made our logos by skimming through different production companies logos and taking inspiration from them. Once we chose the photos in which we wanted to use, we opened up fireworks and edit the photos on that by making the lines more refined and adding our name which personalises it. We chose to use fireworks as it is a simple picture editing programme which we had previously used at GCSE level for ICT.
